LAVERTON commuters are making the most of secure bike parking at Laverton railway station, with bike cages at the station the busiest in Victoria.
Figures released last week by the Bicycle Network Victoria (BNV) show more than 180 local residents had registered for the Parkiteer Bike Parking system, which provides secure cages to store bikes.
BNV Parkiteer program manager Ian Clarke said Laverton was the state's most popular station, having the highest number of members and the most usage. "All cages on that line [Laverton, Werribee, Newport and Hoppers Crossing] are successful. When the Laverton cage opened in mid-2010 there were only seven people using it each month. Now there's 29-30 cyclists a day using it."
Mr Clarke said despite the success of the Parkiteer system at Laverton, access to the north side of the station remained a problem.
BNV was lobbying the Transport Department to add another cage on Railway Avenue's south side. "We have two cages already at the station, one on each side of the track. People have trouble accessing the north one and can't fit their bikes in the lift to go over there [north side] to store their bikes. They need to expand the Laverton bike cage on Railway Avenue."
